Lauren is constantly proving that dressing can be an art form and we are more than happy to chat with her about everything fashion – trends, shopping and most importantly how she builds her fairy style.
Hi Lauren, it is so nice to chat with you again. We must start by asking about your look for Simone Rocha’s show. It was stunning! Tell us more about it!
I wore Peter Pan collar bubble top and bubble skirt with a black sequin bralette top worn over the look. It was in the softest ballet pink ever and I wore it with a black mini Lady Dior bag, Bottega boots and my Kristen Farrell jewelry. All of these were my constants for fashion month. It’s important to have consistent pieces in your wardrobe during the month especially for your own continuity. I tend to build a character when I buy my wardrobe for each season.
Season to season the characters need to make sense, so they need to be friends, you know, to be able to have a coffee or champagne together, so that the closet has grown and changed but is still consistently me. My continuity pieces this season were bows and the pieces mentioned above.
There was a lot of black this season, which I am usually not a fan of wearing so I had to make it work for me. I mixed my signature style with Eva Green’s Penny Dreadful character with Shirley Manson from Garbage and Angelfish with the styling of Mary, Queen of Scots in the TV show Reign and that was my character for fall 2019. I started building her in February. She made her debut at the Save Venice charity masquerade ball in NYC.
Speaking of fashion weeks, which shows impressed you the most?
They all are super special to me. If I attend the show it isn’t because I just want to go for the sake of going or just to be seen. I always have a true love for the designer and his or her work and a real reason for wanting to be there, to be in their world for a moment. Even if it’s just a straight catwalk or a presentation I get so lost in the clothes… Each show I attend is super special to me.
I have to say though I was quite impressed by the pentameter and the choreography of the models walking in Balmain. I loved seeing the clothes move down steps at Erdem. For me seeing the clothing move and do their job in front of me is the most important reason to attend the show. At Molly Goddard you had the clothes first right in front of you and then on the stage so you really see them do everything. It was fantastic! As far as performance – Simone Rocha’s show at a castle was incredible to see and Thom Browne was a show stopping theatrical experience. Also the way that Richard Quinn launched his bridal.
Was there a collection that will make you cheat on your personal style?
You can’t cheat on your own style. It is yours, it is constantly evolving. I can make a short mini work into my style as much as a voluminous dress is my style. It is all about how you own up to what you wear and how you wear it.
As long as you are confident, you will always look fabulous… If you are not comfortable with yourself, then no matter how great your styling talent may be you will never achieve style. Style comes from a confidence in your own skin first.. everything else is your character’s clothes
What’s the Spring 2020 piece you can not wait to wear?
The Valentino white smock dresses!!!
Are there any trends or hyped pieces you don’t really get…
The square toe shoe… Guys, they don’t make your foot look pretty and all of these blazers and suits… I mean really?! You do not have to dress in a suit to be taken seriously. Power DRESSing!!!
Considering your style, your autumn uniform has to be way more exciting that jeans and camel coat. Are we right?
I don’t have a uniform my favorite part of the day is dressing! Today I’m in a pink Carolina Herrera runway coat, Prada rhinestone heels, a knit Gucci black and white checkered pants with matching cardigan, a Dior hat and mini Lady Dior in crystal black and white checkered pattern.
I do own two camel coats. One is Christopher Kane with cool flower appliqué from four years ago, the other one is Fendi with zippers. This season I wear them like a color, not a neutral. I am not a neutral person I have an opinion on everything.
Generally speaking, what is your advice for good fall 2019 purchases?
This fall is a good time to stock up on classics if you are that kind of gal, as black is here in a big way and suits too.
But if you are more like me… I love Fendi this year in a big way, like every piece. And Bottega’s bags are amazing! I am a big fan of new Celine. The dresses and yes, if you like suits – get the grey short suit. Emilia Wickstead houndstooth everything and leopard coat. Erdem and Christopher Kane have incredible fall collections if you are fans and resort is due any day. Also, everything from Simone Rocha and Molly Goddard!
For spring stock up white dresses from Loewe, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Erdem.
